About this service

Two visits that protect your season.

Pool opening gets your pool from covered and dormant to clean, balanced and swimmable for the season. Winterisation, or closing, prepares the pool and equipment to sit through the colder months without damage.

Both involve more than lifting or fitting a cover. Opening includes cleaning, restarting and checking the plant, and balancing the water. Winterisation includes balancing and dosing for winter, lowering levels where needed, protecting equipment and pipework from frost, and fitting the cover.

It's for outdoor pool owners who don't run their pool year-round. Customers book us to winterise and open their pool every year, with the correct chemicals each time. Doing it properly matters because a poorly closed pool can mean frost-damaged equipment and a green, expensive start to summer.

If it's ignored

When closing and opening go wrong.

Most spring problems were created the autumn before.

Frost damage

Water left in pumps, filters, heaters and exposed pipework can freeze and crack them, leading to costly replacements in spring.

A green pool in spring

Without the right winter chemistry, algae grows under the cover, turning opening into a long clean-up.

Stained finishes

Leaves and debris left sitting over winter can stain liners and tiles.

A late start to summer

If problems are found at opening, repairs and recovery can eat into the swimming season.

Watch out for

Common mistakes we see

  • Fitting the cover without balancing and dosing the water
  • Leaving water in equipment exposed to frost
  • Opening too late, after algae has started
  • Starting equipment without checking it first

In detail

What each visit involves.

The exact steps depend on your pool, equipment and cover.

Spring opening

Removing and cleaning the cover, clearing debris, topping up the water, reconnecting and restarting equipment, checking for leaks or wear, and testing and balancing the water ready for swimming.

Autumn winterisation

Cleaning the pool, balancing and dosing for winter, lowering the water level where required, draining or protecting equipment and exposed pipework, and fitting the winter cover securely.

Equipment checks

Both visits are a good time to inspect pumps, filters, heaters and valves, so any faults are fixed before they cause trouble.

Covers

Winter and safety covers are fitted correctly. If your cover is worn, we can advise on replacement.

Above-ground pools

Above-ground pools need opening and closing too. We look after those as well.

Domestic and commercial

Seasonal opening and closing for home and commercial outdoor pools.
